the one day in the whole year where the miserable bergens get to be happy is Trollstice, when each of them can taste true happiness....... (as in eat a troll). one Trollstice however King Peppy leads the trolls through secret tunnels ("no troll left behind!!!") and they escape the caged tree where they've been held by the bergens for years. unfortunately for Chef, who was supposed to serve prince Gristle's first troll, she gets banished when they find the tree empty.
skip forward to Princess Poppy who is preparing to throw the BIGGEST, LOUDEST, most GLITTERY party known to trollkind in celebration of the 20th year since their escape. she invites everyone including Branch, the troll living in a bergen-proofed bunker. he stomps on the invitation card (for the record he keeps all of the cards she's given him which is kind of really sweet, here he's just being dramatic i guess) and says that this WILL bring the bergens straight to them. Poppy brushes this off and to everyone but Branch's surprise, Chef crashes the party and scoops up a handful of them, in hopes to regain her power by bringing back Trollstice.
and so Poppy sets off on a rescue mission, shortly joined by Branch after his bunker gets invaded by the other trolls.
they arrive at Bergen Town and find the imprisoned trolls, but get caught by the scullery maid who was told to guard them. seeing she has a major crush on King Gristle, they decide to join forces - the trolls will help Bridget impress the king and in return she will help them escape. (PS. "BECAUSE SINGING KILLED MY GRANDMA, OKAY" happens here)
the trolls give Bridget a makeover and help Lady Glittersparkles (Bridget) charm him & it is a SUCCESS as Gristle is absolutely smitten and invites her to be his plus-one to Trollstice.
some time before Bridget and Gristle's date, Creek (one of the trolls captured, also he has a british accent, 'cause he's evil) was about to get eaten by Gristle & to be spared, he agrees to bring the bergens into the Troll Village, so now the whole village is in a fucking pot to be eaten.
everyone is shit coloured like Branch 'cause theyre all sad now, but him singing to cheer up Poppy has them colourful again, including Branch, so that doesn't last too long. Bridget leads them outside, risking her life in Bergen Town in order to save them as a thanks for helping her dream come true, but Poppy will NOT let that slide. Poppy goes right back inside and tells the bergens that they don't need to eat trolls to be happy and that there is happiness inside all of them and that somehow works, because everyone is dancing and the trolls and bergens become friends. THE END

out of the 3 main movies, i think this one is the best. it does a great job introducing the world & develop Poppy and Branch's dynamic. the visuals are fun and sparkles everywhere + the handcrafted effect is pretty nice (though that goes for all the movies). albeit i think it's ridiculous the bergens get forgiven at the end, because they have been eating trolls for years. that's kind of bananas, imagine talking to the bergen that ate your grandma. what's not only bananas but also nuts is that they simply discover happiness when Poppy tells them to be happy (???). the franchise has a general "just be happy" messaging, which i'm not a fan of, but this one didn't do it outside of the bergen situation. first time i watched it i lowkey cried a little about Bridget crying so i'll give it extra points for that
